Fire — “When the disciples Jacob and John realized what was happening, they returned to Jesus and said, “Lord, if you wanted to, you could command fire to fall down from heaven, just as Elijah did and destroy all these wicked people.” Jesus rebuked them sharply, saying, “Don’t you realize what spews from your hearts when you say that? The Son of Man did not come to destroy life, but to bring life to the earth.” So they went to another village instead.” (Luke 9:54-56, The Passion Translation0
The disciples wanted to call fire down on the Samaritans just because they wouldn’t let them pass through their village. Jesus rebuked them, telling them to check their hearts. How many times do we want something to happen to others for not letting us do what we want? Probably more than we would like to count.
Later, the Samaritans came to know and follow Jesus! “When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that the Samaritans had accepted God’s message of life, they sent Peter and John to pray over them so that they would receive the Holy” (Acts 8:14-15, TPT). If they had called fire down, a whole village (and maybe even a whole people group) wouldn’t have come to a saving knowledge of Christ.
Next time you want to call fire down, stop and think of the consequences you might cause. Instead of a fiery rebuke, how about calling on love that brings others to a saving knowledge of Christ!
Be a Blessing,
Sir Gregory
