Questions — “His disciples asked him, “Why do all the religious scholars insist that Elijah must first appear before the Anointed One comes?” (Matt 17:10, The Passion Translation)

“Later the disciples came to Him privately and asked, “Why couldn’t we cast out the demon?” (Matt 17:19, TPT)

“And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?”

But He turned and rebuked them, and said, “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.” And they went to another village.” (LK 9:54-56, NKKV)

These are just a few examples of questions which the disciples had. Here’s another: “Who sinned for this man to be blind?” (Matt 9:2)

The question I want to ask is are questions wrong? It all comes down to our motives. Do we want information? Do we want status? Is understanding character or authority? Is the purpose for learning or teaching? Are our motives to help others? Or are they selfish, merely to help ourselves?

Some might say that the disciples wanting to call down fire down to destroy would disqualify them. But Jesus rebuked them and ultimately used it to teach them.

Questions are the way we learn. We just need to ask ourselves, where are the questions are coming from? From a place of learning or a place of exalting ourselves?

Be a Blessing, Sir Gregory
